The story of Navratri basically signifies the victory of Good over Evil. In many parts of the country, people celebrate this festival by imitating the original storyline to remind people about its importance and moral.
As per legends, the story starts with a buffalo demon Mahishasuran, who worshipped Lord Shiva and granted with the power of eternity. Filled with pride, Mahishasuran started killing innocent people and aims to win seven lokas.
Intimated by his power all the gods from swargaloka pleaded to Lord Shiva to tame the demon. Then Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva united their powers and created a divine Durga, the Warrior Goddess.
When Mahishasuran saw Goddess Durga, he immediately got entranced by her beauty and asked her to marry him. Goddess Durga agreed to marry him but at one condition that he should win over her in a duel.
This duel went on for 9 nights and the end of 9th night Goddess Durga beheaded Mahishasuran. So, the tenth day is celebrated as Vijayadashmi, the victory of good over evil.
